Important cyber alert: Smoke detector phishing email

We are aware of a phishing email circulating relating to a smoke detector compliance issue, asking people to click on a link to check their status.

Northamptonshire Police’s Economic Crime Team (ECU) are urging residents to remain vigilant following this email. 

To protect yourself from scams, known as 'phishing':

• Don’t open attachments or click on links in emails or texts from senders you don’t know
• Never give out personal information, financial details or passwords in response to an email, when you receive an unexpected phone call or in response to a text message
• Set up spam filters on all of your accounts
• Don’t respond to emails or texts from unknown sources

• Always go to a website directly, by typing out the address yourself, when logging into an account

   

To report phishing emails, forward the suspicious email to report@phishing.gov.uk.  The National Cyber Security Centre will analyse and block malicious websites and email addresses.

To report phishing text messages, forward the scam text to 7726 (it’s free).  This alerts your mobile network provider.

Police are also encouraging members of the public to share this warning, particularly with elderly or vulnerable people who may be more frequently targeted by fraudsters.
