Keeping Northamptonshire Safe from Drink and Drug Drivers

19th November – 16th December 2024

Northamptonshire Crimestoppers, working in partnership with Northamptonshire Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Northamptonshire Police, and Aquarius, are collaborating to deliver effective and impactful activity across Northamptonshire to raise awareness of the impact of drink and drug driving.

Drink and drug driving in the UK devastates lives. Recent government data reveals that between 290 and 320 people are killed annually in vehicle collisions involving drivers over the legal alcohol limit.

Statistics show that between 2014 to 2022 there was an increase of 40% in the number of drink and drug driving convictions nationally and so far, this year, Crimestoppers have received over 800 reports relating to drink and drug driving for Northamptonshire alone.

Every Christmas, in a unified effort, police forces ramp up efforts to catch drink and drug drivers. In 2023, the operation conducted 50,000 breath tests, with 9.5% testing positive, failed, or refused. Additionally, 6,846 drug tests were carried out, with 48.5% testing positive. (Overall, 84% of offenders were male, additionally 74% were aged 25 or over.)

Crimestoppers, working with partners, are encouraging people to speak out about those who are drink and / or drug driving to keep them and their friends and family safe. We want to raise awareness of the dangers of drink and drug driving and encourage anyone who has information on a repeat or suspected offender to speak up.
