REMEMBERING CORNER GREEN - SOCIAL HISTORY IN THE MAKING

An illustrated talk on the results of in-depth research gathered by Sandra and Paul Johnson on the history of a little known site in the parish called Corner Green close to Collyweston Great Wood.  Royal hunting ground, working woodland, prisoner of war camp and post-World War 2 housing - Corner Green has seen it all.   The talk will be enhanced by former residents’ recollections.

***BONUS UPDATE ON COLLYWESTON PALACE***
In the second half of the evening there will be a short presentation and slide show of images from excavations last weekend. A team of volunteers and members of the Society led by Jen Browning of Leicester University dug four exploratory trenches in a private garden on the palace site, prior to planned groundwork.

A successful weekend’s work: one trench revealed a substantial wall topped by chamfered stone slabs with dateable pottery and roof tile fragments in situ, meaning it can be dated to the mid-late 1400s, the era of Lady Margaret Beaufort.   The stone slab floor of a building was excavated in a second trench.   We are awaiting further analysis by Jen and finds experts and look forward to reporting in full in due course.

It promises to be an exciting evening!  All welcome.  Members free of charge.  £7 for Visitors.

With best wishes
